IMPROVE SERVICE DELIVERY, STAKEHOLDERS ON CHIEFTAINCY MATTERS CHARGED

Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, has charged stakeholders in chieftaincy matters to be efficient in service delivery.

Hon. Hamzat made the charge at the opening of a workshop at the Obas Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, urging stakeholders, as umpires of chieftaincy matters to be proactive and abreast of Obas and Chiefs' Law of Ogun State 2021, noting that chieftaincy administration is rooted on stipulated rules and guidelines

He revealed that any deviation from chieftaincy matters could make it cumbersome, saying all hands must be on deck to ensure sustenance and protection of integrity of the Traditional Council in the state.

Remarking, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Rotimiolu Akinlesi, affirmed that the roles of Local Government Councils in chieftaincy matters could not be overemphasised, pointing out that it was pertinent to continue to uphold the tenets of the traditional institution.

He stressed that the bottleneck encountered over the years in filling vacant stools had become challenging and could only be addressed with a collective approach, appealing to stakeholders to complement government’s efforts in  "ISEYA" and "Building Our Future Together" mantra.

In their paper presentation titled, "The Role Of Local Government In The New Obas And Chiefs' Law Of Ogun State 2021", Ogun State Head of Service, Mr. Kolawole Fagbohun and Solicitor-General/Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Olusegun Olaotan, said stakeholders must be conversant with the legal framework and administrative process in filling vacant chieftaincy stools, in order to reduce crisis, delays and unnecessary litigations, while stipulated roles in the Obas and Chiefs' Law of Ogun State 2021, should be understood by all parties involved.

They stated that stakeholders should have qualities that would enable them discharge their responsibilities without fear or favour by maintaining neutrality and adhering to principles of good governance, adding that leadership potentials should be considered by the community in choosing their leaders.

In his remarks, Chairman, Abeokuta North Local Government, Hon. Adebayo Ayorinde, noted that the workshop was informative and would help to reduce the issue of excess litigation, while the Secretary, Ikenne Local Government, Mr. Rotimi Oshinowo, said the knowledge gained would further help in resolving most of the issues confronting his local government.
